Scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in California have developed a compound that enhances endurance even without regular exercise. The result of the study, published in the journal Cell Metabilism, showed that thanks to the drug, mice were given more endurance, less weight gain, and more sensitivity to insulin.

Which ingredient has been tested?

The researchers around Ronald Evans investigated the mode of action of the PPAR delta gene by genetically modifying laboratory mice accordingly. These genetically modified test mice turned out to be true endurance athletes during the examinations. They completed longer periods in the impeller without being exhausted afterwards, put on no fat and showed a high insulin sensitivity – the latter should be especially interesting for diabetics. In addition, they burned fat during their sporting activities instead of sugar. The researchers also achieved the same effects in their study by administering substance GW1516 to the rodents.

What does the result mean for you?

Previous studies had already shown that the active ingredient GW1516 has a positive effect on endurance and fat burning. However, the substance is also increasingly criticized. He should be carcinogenic. In addition, other side effects have not been explored.

The researchers now want to work to show that the same positive, health-promoting effects of endurance sports without the physical activities but only by taking a tablet. This would be an enormous breakthrough, especially for diabetics and overweight people who can not do sports for health reasons.
