Self-confidence – too much, too little or just right

In order to understand exactly what is meant by self-confidence and why too much or too little of it is bad, one must first understand the word neighbor’s self-confidence. Being aware of yourself, knowing what you can and can not do or who you are – that’s the first step before you can have a certain amount of self-confidence. Consciousness grows trust. How can one develop a ‘healthy’ level of self-confidence?

Actually, this word in the absolute sense means the person we see when we look at ourselves. If this ‘look’ is as objective as possible, then a realistic ‘self-view’ can also give rise to appropriate self-confidence. However, if the self-assessment is subjective, then our self-confidence can be seriously disturbed.

It is optimal if one does not let one’s own value be influenced by the behavior or reactions of others. This way, one can gain a certain degree of security and stability out of oneself. Adequate or balanced self-confidence means appreciating oneself and loving one’s life.

Lack of self-confidence

People with too little self-confidence easily find themselves in a certain role as victims. Some studies even show that lack of self-confidence increases the risk of depression and anxiety disorders. Possible consequences include eating disorders in the form of anorexia or obesity, career failure, relationship problems and alcohol abuse or drug abuse.

Blame is often failures in the past. Fear dominates all too fast and the person concerned lacks the courage. That binds a lot of energy. What remains is the (false) conviction: “I can not do anything”, “I am nothing”, “I always do everything wrong”.

Modesty is not thanked

One fact is that you can deal with humble people much better than with brawlers. The downside nowadays, however, is that a humble person is not automatically listened to. This could also give the impression, “I’m unimportant” or “I’ll never listen anyway”. Arrogance and hubris, however, today lead quickly to the conclusion that someone just voice heard ‘.

Self-esteem should never be confused with selfishness. Because self-confidence does not sit down at the expense of others through and will not triumph by a dominant appearance of others.

Psychologists see as a deciding factor how much appreciation and social acceptance a person was given. To a certain extent, the genes indicate tendencies to which a person tends. However, the parents’ home has significantly more influence, as well as experiences in elementary school, puberty and the first years of work.
