Peptic Ulcer: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment & Risk Factor

What Is Peptic Ulcer Disease? The Peptic ulcer is known to as the issues found in the stomach in the form of blisters, ulcers and acidic perforations which are quite painful. There are three types of peptic ulcers depending on the position of their occurrence, mentioned as follows:

  1. Esophageal Ulcers: Ulcers developing in the oesophagus (a muscular tube passing food from the mouth to stomach)
  2. Gastric Ulcers: development of ulcers anywhere in the stomach.that develop inside the stomach. Acid secretions in the stomach contribute in increasing the pain and exacerbate the condition of the ulcer.
  3. Duodenal Ulcers: Duodenum is the junction where stomach ends and intestine starts. Ulcers can sprout and develop in duodenum as well known as Duodenal Ulcer.

What Causes Peptic Ulcer?

The cause behind the development of ulcers is multiple. However, researchers have made this very clear that excessive acid secretion and other digestive fluids are the basic reason for ulcer development in oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. In the presence of excessive digestive fluids, there is a bacteria known as  Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), it actively participates in the formation of an ulcer.

There are certain circumstances that can either or cause or facilitate the growth of ulcer:

  • Surplus acid secretion either from the glands or Gastronomes (acid producing tumour)
  • Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are prescribed as painkillers but unfortunately, they might act opposite to their nature. NSAIDs include aspirin, naproxen and ibuprofen which are normally prescribed.
  • Excessive Alcohol consumption.
  • Radiation beams used as a treatment might also make the ulcer worse.
  • Smoke Addiction.

At the very beginning, doctors prescribe medication which is for the treatment of symptoms along with acid control medication for reducing the release of acid. For the diagnosis of severity, upper endoscopy is used. In this procedure, a tube with a camera through the mouth is taken all the way in the stomach (affected area) and severity is examined then. further treatment entirely depends on the severity of the ulcer.

The Peptic ulcer has to be treated properly and efficiently so that it doesn’t grow back or get worse. The exacerbated ulcer can lead to severe health issues.
