Orthodontists: When the teeth migrate “Braces Overview”

Whether a slate tooth, an over or underbite or a too small upper jaw: A brace can help to regulate the jaw in the jaws. The best age to start an orthodontic treatment is between nine and 12 years. But adults can also offset optical and medical deficiencies. Here you will find an overview of braces and their mode of action.

If the teeth grow crooked, you would rather not have the smile for a photo. The optical blemish can weigh heavily on the psyche. However, medical problems can also result from tooth misalignment. If the incisors do not meet properly, the formation of S, T and Z sounds can be disturbed. If upper and lower jaws do not interact with each other, power distributions and functionality are disturbed, muscle tension and misload occur.

Concentration problems, headaches and tinnitus can be the result of a tooth misalignment. The visit to the orthodontist can be a first step to problem solving. In general, children should be examined for the first time in primary school. At this age, the dentition is in alternation and growth – the jaw bone is still soft and corrections can be made well. Between the ninth and the twelfth year, about 60 percent of the youngsters are in orthodontic treatment.

Loose clips move teeth and jaw

A loose brace consists of a piece of plastic with arcuate wires attached. The wires exert pressure on individual teeth and thus bring them into the desired position. The doctor always pulls the wires back to adjust the clasp to the changed situation in the mouth. When talking or laughing, this variant should sit firmly in the mouth and do not disturb or slip

Tooth braces, which work both the upper and lower jaw, call the expert activators. The plastic pieces are bulky and the patient must bite them. Therefore, these models are usually worn only at night – speaking is hardly possible with them. Activators are used for an over- or underbite, for example, and move the jaw into the desired position. Also protruding incisors can be brought back into the row of teeth.

Loose braces are usually worn over a period of one to three years. The success of the treatment depends strongly on the consequence of the carrier and the regularity of the control investigations.

Fixed braces: From Brackets to Invisalign

If the teeth have to be shaved together, a fixed brace is suitable for treatment. Small metal plates (so-called brackets) are glued to the outside of the teeth. With the help of wires, rubbers and braces, pressure is applied to the teeth and they begin to wander. The brackets are usually metal colors, but now there are also models that resemble the tooth color. This makes the braces more inconspicuous. The metal plates and the wires can also be fixed on the inner side of the tooth. Here they are hardly visible, but the scope for treatment is limited. Speaking or eating can also be severely impaired in this method, especially in the initial phase.

A relatively new method of placing teeth in rows is called Invisalign Rails. These are specially made, transparent plastic rails, which are placed on the row of teeth. They are not visible and exert a significantly lower pressure on the teeth compared to a fixed brace – this increases the duration of the treatment. The invisible rails must be renewed every two weeks by the orthodontist. In the course of a treatment, approximately 20 to 60 rails are used.

A firm brace is worn for about one to two years, depending on the patient and the patient. Subsequent to the correction, the insertion of a retainer is necessary. This ensures that the teeth remain in the desired position and do not return to the return path.

For whom are braces suitable?

In principle, anyone can correct his teeth with a brace. The teeth must still sit firmly in the jaw and free of caries or other inflammations. If the jaw bone is not fully developed, rapid success is achieved. But even adults can get their teeth straightened . Some dentists and orthodontists strongly recommend quitting smoking before using a clasp.

After the onset: painful habituation phase?

Immediately after the insertion of a loose or fixed brace, pain can occur on the teeth or the teeth holding device. The jaw must get used to the new situation. After about one to two weeks, the pressure pains slowly decay. Rubbing the braces uncomfortably to the gums, a wax plate can be applied to reduce the pressure.

If there are several weeks after the insertion of the clasp to pain and problems in eating or speaking, the orthodontist should be consulted. By adjusting the pain again, the pain can be remedied.

Maintain the braces properly

A large area on which plaques can form can be formed by the adherence of a tooth panel, whether loose or firm. Tooth braces are therefore a risk factor for caries and gum problems. Proper care of the teeth and the clasp is important for oral health. A loose brace should be cleaned thoroughly after each use with the toothbrush and toothpaste. No whitish surface may form on the plastic surface. Care must be exercised on the wires: they can be adjusted by pressure, thus endangering the results of the treatment. According to the instructions of the orthodontist, the loose braces must be inserted from time to time in a special cleaning solution.

In the case of wearers of a fixed brace the cleaning is somewhat more difficult. In order that no food residue can accumulate on the brackets and the wires, the mouth should be rinsed with water after every meal. Toothbrush bristles and dental floss help to remove the dirt from the frame during tooth brushing and to prevent tooth decay. Toothbrush wearers should periodically perform professional cleaning at the doctor’s office.

Who pays the correction?

As a rule, the statutory health insurance funds are responsible for third-to-fifth-degree miscarriages in children and adolescents up to the age of 18. In case of serious health problems, which are associated with orthodontic procedures, adults can also count on the support of the health insurance companies. Corrections for cosmetic reasons are not accepted by the funds. In the multi-year treatment phase, costs are between 3,000 and 15,000 euros, depending on the type of dislocation and type of clamp.

Most health insurance funds pay 80% of the costs for the first child, 90% for the second child. The remaining amount must first be taken over by the families themselves. After completion of the treatment, the cash registers pay back the self-made payments. However, a treatment within the desired time frame is necessary.

Braces: The key to success is consistency

To ensure you do not have to pay, it is important to wear the braces regularly and according to your doctor’s instructions. If the loose clip is too short or too short, the success of the treatment can be expected. With a fixed model, the control terminals must be followed to retract the wires so that the teeth progress. Anyone who adheres to the medical instructions may expect a smile after a treatment.
