Hemhidrosis: When you suddenly sweat blood
Sweat blood and water – this phrase became real for a young Italian woman. The woman suffers from the rare disease hemhidrosis: Instead of water, she sweats blood.
Again and again, the 21-year-old ran sweat beads over his face. But when the girl blinked, she saw red. Although outwardly no injuries were visible, first her face, then her hands were wet with blood. After one to five minutes, the bleeding recurred again and again.
For three years, the Italian woman began to bleed on her hands and forehead, until she went to the doctor. Within that time, the young woman had completely shut herself off from social life. Too big was her fear of bleeding in public. From the initial shame developed an anxiety disorder, then a depression.
As the “Canadian Medical Association Journal” reported, the doctors were also initially a mystery. The 21-year-old seemed completely healthy both externally and internally. But again and again, the bleeding on the face and hands began again. Then the doctors diagnosed “hemhidrosis”.
What is haemhidrosis?
This is a very rare disease in which sufferers sweat blood. In some cases, only the blood pigment is sweated, which in turn explains the red color of the sweat. The disease can be congenital, but can develop only in the course of old age.
The reason for the blood sweating is usually a weakness of the vessels, which then burst more easily. Psychic factors, such as anxiety, tension or stress, are also considered to be the cause of haemhidrosis.
In the case of the Italian, although the bleeding increased in mental stress, treatment for depression and anxiety showed no relief of the disease. Only antihypertensive drugs were able to improve, but the haemhidrosis did not disappear completely. In combination with anti-anxiety drugs, however, one may hope that the young woman will someday be able to lead a normal life again.
