Corneal curvature: Signs, Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention
Corneal curvature of the eyes
The corneal curvature (astigmatism, also visual acuity) is similar to short-sightedness and farsightedness but is less frequent. It can affect one or both eyes. Patients with corneal curvature may see blurred in both the near and the distant areas. The name “bar-sightedness” comes from the fact that in this weakness a point is perceived as a blurred line or as a staff.
In those affected, the curvature of the cornea deviates from its natural form. A normal cornea is curved like a ball. The corneal curvature leads to differently curved domains of the cornea, which has a negative effect on the refractive power. Differentiate between regular and irregular astigmatism. The corneal curvature is usually congenital; however, scars are also a question of corneal injuries.
Symptoms of corneal curvature
A slight corneal curvature may not be noticed at all.
For blurred vision, eye and headaches often occur, which is caused by the special effort of the eyes.
Diagnosis and treatment
With the ophthalmometer, the curvature and the radius of curvature can be precisely determined in each plane. Here too, the dioptry value indicates the severity of the malformation.
Just like wide and short-sightedness, a regular corneal curvature can be corrected with the help of glasses with cylindrical lenses or through stiff contact lenses. If, however, the cornea is severely damaged, it may be necessary to have an operative corneal horn set. In many cases, the disease can also be remedied by a laser surgery, but the success prognosis becomes more difficult the more the cornea is curved.
If the maximum and minimum breaking planes have an angle that is more than 90 ° apart (irregular corneal curvature), the glasses can usually not help. Here, only special contact lenses or corneal transplantation are possible.
Corneal curvature is a disease which can not be prevented. Parents, in particular, should not fail to have their children examined by an ophthalmologist as early as possible in order to exclude future deficits.
