Amygdala: Location affects stress resistance
If the Amygdala is healthy, we are more relaxed. The brain area is responsible for stress – and is influenced by our place of residence, as researchers found.
The home is a place to relax. But not only how we live , but above all the Wherehas an underestimated influence on health.
Because life in the city can cause chronic stress . This in turn increases the risk of developing mental illnesses such as depression , anxiety disorders or schizophrenia . This assumption has now been confirmed.
It is already known that the Amygdala is more active in people who live in the city than in rural dwellers. Now the Max-Plank-Institut has raised the realization to a new level: What is the situation with big cities? Does it make a difference whether you live in the inner city or in the natural border area?
The psychologist Sabine Kühn has devoted herself to the question. Together with her team, she investigated the connection between a near-natural habitat and brain health among people living in a large city.
341 adults aged between 61 and 82 years were given reminders and donations. The scientists investigated the activity of the cerebral arteries, which are responsible for stress processing. The focus was on the Amygdala. The area is also called almond kernel and influences, among other things, how to deal with stress. The assumption: the healthier the amygdala, the more stress-resistant the human being.
The result of the study is clear: there are also differences within the city. Nature has a health-promoting effect on our brain. Those who live near the woods have a healthier structure of the amygdala and can probably deal with stress better.
However, urban parks, green areas and water areas are excluded from the notion of nature. The Amygdala seems to have a positive effect on a village at the edge of the forest.
Incidentally, this relationship could be demonstrated independently of income and education – only the proximity to the forest seems to be responsible for the positive effect. In addition to the generally lower rent, it is also worthwhile for our health to live a bit off the inner city. This is thanks not only to our wallet but also to our brain.
